Hanson School Additionally Resourced Centre (ARC) is for students who are Deaf, Hearing Impaired and / or who have a Vision Impairment

Hanson School is the only secondary school in Bradford which is additionally resourced to meet the needs of large numbers of students who have a Sensory Impairment. We work in partnership with The Sensory Service to ensure students leave school as confident, independent young people, with a wide range of personal and academic skills that will support them to be independent and successful adults.


Provision and Offer

The Additionally Resourced Centre staff work closely with school to:

  • Raise awareness and understanding of the needs and rights of students with Vision Impairment (VI), those who are Deaf or Hearing Impaired (HI) and students with Multi Sensory Impairment (MSI).
  • Promote equality of access to a high quality, inclusive education for Deaf and Hearing Impaired, MSI students and students with Vision Impairment
  • Work in partnership with families, multi-agency professionals, and voluntary groups to:

– raise educational achievement and attainment

– promote successful outcomes


All students taught and/or supported by the ARC will have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) or will be in the process of being assessed for one. Initially, some students will attend on an assessment place to determine whether the provision is appropriate to meet their individual needs. Referral to the ARC is made through the Local Authority Special Educational Needs (SEN) team.

All students who receive ARC provision will have access to specialist staff and are included in all aspects of the curriculum and life of the school. Pupils benefit from additional teaching, small group and 1-1 interventions in the ARC.

All ARC students also receive additional support and teaching to further develop their skills in the specialist VI and Deaf / HI curricula (see ARC curriculum offer for further information)

Specialist teaching and support is provided by the Bradford Council Sensory Service based in Hanson School, and consists of:

  • Qualified Teachers of the Visually Impaired (QTVI) and Teachers of the Deaf (TOD) who support in lessons across school and plan, teach and assess students in the ARC
  • Specialist Support Assistants who provide support across school, facilitate access to communication and produce specialist resources
  • Senior Habilitation Officers who support with life skills and mobility for students with Vision Impairment
  • Deaf Instructors who support in lessons and teach British Sign Language
  • Technical Support Officers
  • Educational Audiologist – who assesses, advises and provides audiological equipment
  • Behaviour and Wellbeing Officer
  • Parental Involvement Officer
  • Speech and Language Therapist (SALT) delivers programmes on a 1:1 and small group basis with students as well as working closely with ARC staff to support and encourage the development of speech and language skills of students who are Deaf or hearing impaired
  • SEN officer – coordinates annual review meetings
